Some really well done Wolverine covers from Marvel, each in a different art style. From Classical Japanese to Modern pop art they have all the bases covered, the Dali'esq one is my personal favourite.

Portrait of the Reaper

Just finished up a new image, it's pretty dark again (I really need to do some more whimsical/light hearted stuff).

It's a portrait of the grim reaper, that's pretty much all there is too it, was really trying to make it look like a classical painting.

It will probably look off here because blogger seems to hate me, so check out the website to see it as it was intended.

Einstein Caricature and process images

Here's the finished Einstein Caricature with some text for good measure (I apologise if it's lacking contrast, blogger tends to suck it out when I upload!?). I wanted to use all of Albert's formulae but they included symbols neither myself or my laptop understood, so had to make do with the more famous one. I'm still debating on having the text in at all, feel free to comment with your suggestions/opinions.

An Einstein caricature work in progress not sure where I'm goin with it but I'm pretty pleased with how it's going, and an online challenge that I view as a complete failure. Although I think I learned a lot in the process so it's not wasted time.

UK Condemned?

After the riots and everything that's happened over the last week in the UK, has the coalition government condemned us?

This started out with the idea of using the word 'condemned' as the basis for an image. Playing up the Con (conservative) and Dem (Lib Dems) to make it all political and such.

I began with simply 2 portraits, one of David Cameron, and one of Nick Clegg. I kept them grey scale as I knew colour was not going to play a large role in the role and any necessary could be washed in later.

It was the simply a matter of assembling the image, beginning with painting the flag and beginning work on the smoke, before laying in the 2 portraits and completing the smoke.

The text was an effort to make it clear what I was trying to do with 'Con''Dem'ned using the colours and logos from the two parties. It probably breaks every Graphic Design rule there is, but I couldn't think of how else to include it successfully.

Just a few studies from today, don't want to post any other work until it's finished.
Been experimenting with painting over a textured background recently. It's fun, and gives it a more traditional look which is always a plus!

Also, I won the recent Character of the week challenge over on concept art.org. It's the Jack the Ripper image in my previous post.

Apologies and new beginnings

I apologize for the lack of updates recently, I've been without a permanent place to live and thus my internet/scanner access hasn't been particularly reliable. However I'm now settled (for the next 6 months at least) and can begin getting back into some sort of art routine. There's also a great little art cafe around the corner from my new place (I'm typing from there now) that has free wi-fi access so I can at least begin to post some digital work as and when it happens.

Been pushing this image a bit further, and also something I sketched up in front of the tv the other day. I'm not sure if I'll paint it up fully as the composition is very static but I think it has a certain charm. I guess we'll see!

I've got the next 8 portfolio images thumbnailed out, it's just a case of getting them drawn up and painted! Quite excited about what I may end up with.

A new portfolio piece I'm working on, I (again) tried not to overcomplicate the image, I'm going to let the colours and the textures in the fur create some interest and a contrast to the far smoother rendered boy (Atrayu). Then use the clouds to introduce another texture and soften the values slightly where need be. Still pretty early stages atm.

Father Time

First sketch for this weeks topic on ca.org 'Father Time', similar to the mother earth (Gaia) character, except he personifies time and death, not unlike the reaper.

There's still plenty to do detail wise and in terms of the costume, I'm also not sure If I like the position of the scythe. I do quite like th lighting on the hood/face area, and also the hourglass silhouette that makes up most of the image.

I've set myself the task of drawing a different animal everyday, and doing a self portrait everyday. Going to use these as an opportunity to experiment with medium and style a little bit, maybe stumble across something interesting in the process!

Yesterdays animal was rhino...

and the selfportrait was me playing around with shadow a bit, I think this worked quite well and I may try and do a similar thing but with more time and better/different materials.

About an hour on each, graphite on very cheap printer paper.

Another new image, I've been finding recently that I keep coming up with new things and ideas I want to paint. But this is the 4th or 5th image I've started in the last few weeks and I've yet to finish one. I definitely need to start finishing things off.

Still a work in progress but I like the direction it's going, trying to be more intuitive about colour, and worry less about what things 'should' look like, and more about what will look good.

Worked on this one some more, began blocking in the colours. I was a little silly and got sidetracked by the head before I finished blocking in everything. After all that I'm still not sure if I'm happy with the face, but the character's coming along I think.

Sketch for a new image, a kid who's constructed a Samurai costume from household objects. That's right, he's gone all Art Attack on yo' ass! Originally I sketched out just a kid wearing samurai armour, but I wanted it to have more character than that so went with the dress up idea.

There's a few perspective issues with the helmet and things I need to work out, but I like it so far.

On a more personal note, I give you my first new image of my hardcore studying, and my first failure! If nothing else I have learned exactly what I need to work on, and that's basically everything!. I think considering I've never painted metal before the pan came out pretty good as far as I got. But basically I realised that I don't know anything about form, colour especially, even simple things like construction of the head. I have a lot to learn and thankfully plenty of time to do it. I think I'll start with a master study and some still lifes.

Issues with colour?

I have no idea why, but when uploaded to Blogger all the colours seems to loose saturation and the contrast is reduced. If anyone knows why and could let me know how to rectify this that would be great, otherwise please visit my website for the more accurate images.

Been working on this on and off for a pretty long time now, I think I'm ready to call it finished for now, maybe revisit it again in a few months.

It started off very different, and I'm pretty happy with where it's ended up, although I think I would have preferred the head position to be less straight on.

Was also struggling with how dark to make it, not sure if it's working, please feel free to comment and let me know.
