Few more hours into the Neverending Story cover, still plenty to do, need to pop out some highlights and adjust the clouds/smoke.

The Beginning of the Neverending Story
Posted by
dan lambert
A new portfolio piece I'm working on, I (again) tried not to overcomplicate the image, I'm going to let the colours and the textures in the fur create some interest and a contrast to the far smoother rendered boy (Atrayu). Then use the clouds to introduce another texture and soften the values slightly where need be. Still pretty early stages atm.

Finished up that old wizard guy for the Character of the week challenge on ca.org. I didn't finish it in time for the challenge as other things came up but it's done for now. Could spend hours more on this but for what it is I'll call it done.
Bit different to what I normally do but the dramatic lighting was fun!

father, my eagles

First up, some of the better animals and self-portraits from the last few days.
First, eagles!
Next up, me!
I painted this one really small and zoomed out to focus on the thumbnail and getting the values right.
Finally we have a sketch for this weeks CHOW (character of the week) over on conceptart.org.
It's a bit to illustrative I think, but I'm not sure if that's a bad thing? I need to add some more costume details and think of something to throw into the background.

Father Time
Posted by

First sketch for this weeks topic on ca.org 'Father Time', similar to the mother earth (Gaia) character, except he personifies time and death, not unlike the reaper.
There's still plenty to do detail wise and in terms of the costume, I'm also not sure If I like the position of the scythe. I do quite like th lighting on the hood/face area, and also the hourglass silhouette that makes up most of the image.
Tomorrow I'll be scanning some more animals and sp's

More sketches

I've set myself the task of drawing a different animal everyday, and doing a self portrait everyday. Going to use these as an opportunity to experiment with medium and style a little bit, maybe stumble across something interesting in the process!
Yesterdays animal was rhino...
and the selfportrait was me playing around with shadow a bit, I think this worked quite well and I may try and do a similar thing but with more time and better/different materials.
About an hour on each, graphite on very cheap printer paper.

Another new image, I've been finding recently that I keep coming up with new things and ideas I want to paint. But this is the 4th or 5th image I've started in the last few weeks and I've yet to finish one. I definitely need to start finishing things off.
Still a work in progress but I like the direction it's going, trying to be more intuitive about colour, and worry less about what things 'should' look like, and more about what will look good.

edit, it's showing up at a lower saturation on blogger for some reason?

Lonely Ape

Quick sketch from this evening, photoshop over a pencil sketch.
Going to try and keep this one a bit looser, as it works pretty well just blocked in quickly like it is now I think. Idea came after finding the Ape on the Moon contemporary illustration website http://apeonthemoon.com/

Update on the captain

Made a few compositional changes and added a few details, it really doesn't look different enough to justify the time spent on it. I need to rethink my workflow. Either way I think it's a definite step in the right direction

Based on this weeks Character of the week topic over on ConceptArt.org.
I'm taking it in more of a book cover direction as oppose to a straight character design though.
Still a work in progress (obviously)

Samurai update

Worked on this one some more, began blocking in the colours. I was a little silly and got sidetracked by the head before I finished blocking in everything. After all that I'm still not sure if I'm happy with the face, but the character's coming along I think.

"Timmy put down that.....sword?..."

Sketch for a new image, a kid who's constructed a Samurai costume from household objects. That's right, he's gone all Art Attack on yo' ass! Originally I sketched out just a kid wearing samurai armour, but I wanted it to have more character than that so went with the dress up idea.
There's a few perspective issues with the helmet and things I need to work out, but I like it so far.
