Incredibly informative insight into caricature, and also into people and the nature of celebrity. Some fantastic drawing as well of course.

It's been a little while since I updated, I've been pretty busy with client work the last few weeks so I thought I'd pop in with an interesting little TED talk on 'doodling'. Check it out if you have a minute to spare!

Portrait of the Reaper
Posted by
dan lambert
Just finished up a new image, it's pretty dark again (I really need to do some more whimsical/light hearted stuff).
It's a portrait of the grim reaper, that's pretty much all there is too it, was really trying to make it look like a classical painting.
It will probably look off here because blogger seems to hate me, so check out the website to see it as it was intended.
Process to follow.

Einstein Caricature and process images
Posted by
dan lambert
Here's the finished Einstein Caricature with some text for good measure (I apologise if it's lacking contrast, blogger tends to suck it out when I upload!?). I wanted to use all of Albert's formulae but they included symbols neither myself or my laptop understood, so had to make do with the more famous one. I'm still debating on having the text in at all, feel free to comment with your suggestions/opinions.
Included are the steps (click for larger view), for a full write up/tutorial on the making of the image check out www.danlambertart.com and go to 'Process'.

Some works in progress and a failure
Posted by
dan lambert
An Einstein caricature work in progress not sure where I'm goin with it but I'm pretty pleased with how it's going, and an online challenge that I view as a complete failure.
Although I think I learned a lot in the process so it's not wasted time.

UK Condemned?
Posted by
dan lambert
After the riots and everything that's happened over the last week in the UK, has the coalition government condemned us?
This started out with the idea of using the word 'condemned' as the basis for an image. Playing up the Con (conservative) and Dem (Lib Dems) to make it all political and such.
I began with simply 2 portraits, one of David Cameron, and one of Nick Clegg. I kept them grey scale as I knew colour was not going to play a large role in the role and any necessary could be washed in later.
It was the simply a matter of assembling the image, beginning with painting the flag and beginning work on the smoke, before laying in the 2 portraits and completing the smoke.
The text was an effort to make it clear what I was trying to do with 'Con''Dem'ned using the colours and logos from the two parties. It probably breaks every Graphic Design rule there is, but I couldn't think of how else to include it successfully.
Here is the final image, it's come out very dark as per usual when I upload to blogger. Check out my website to view it as it's intended to be viewed www.danlambertart.com

Jimmy Carr

Quick caricature of the rather funny Mr Jimmy Carr from today, quite happy with the way the colours came out on this one, although I'm unsure of the actual caricature itself, I'll get a better idea of it after a break from looking at it.

Been working on this one for a while now, I've lost the ability to look at it objectively so I'm calling it done for now. I'll revisit it at a later date and see how I feel about it then.
edit: no idea why but its draining all the contrast and colour out of the image when uploaded onto here, check it out on my website for a proper look - http://www.danlambertart.com/editorial

Studies
Posted by
dan lambert
Just a few studies from today, don't want to post any other work until it's finished.
Been experimenting with painting over a textured background recently. It's fun, and gives it a more traditional look which is always a plus!
Also, I won the recent Character of the week challenge over on concept art.org. It's the Jack the Ripper image in my previous post.

Some recent challenge entries
Posted by
dan lambert
My last 2 entries for conceptart.org's CHoW (character of the week) challenge.
I've been trying to bring more texture and brushstrokes into my work, and I think these are a definite step in the right direction. I'd encourage any other artist to participate in these online challenges, they're a perfect place to experiment, and also rather fun!

Great post, and even better blog name!

Stumbled across this great article on Phil McAndrew's blog (The Marvelous Mustache Factory) entitled 'Super Obvious Secrets That I Wish They’d Teach In Art School'. I think it's pretty self explanatory what it's about!
Covers useful tid-bits including:
-Draw Everyday
-Challenge Yourself
-Have fun
basically if you read this article you are 100% guaranteed* to succeed as an illustrator
(*there's a slight chance you may not be 100% guaranteed to succeed..... but stop slacking off and your odds go way up!)

Little piece done for a new political blog,
After the Liberal Democrat party suffered its worst performance in council elections in England for 20 years, what's next for Nick Clegg? (party leader and deputy Prime-minister)
You can read the article in full here
Tried to get a bit looser with this one, also had a bit more fun with the colours, definitely enjoyed it.

Dali and Destino

Recently rewatched the Disney/Dali collaborative short film Destino. It's a trippy but beautiful experience.
It inspired me to do up one final caricature before I start finishing the new folio images.
Dali will melt your brain.

My brother recently attended a tattoo convention in Nepal, and took 2 very large banners featuring my logo design for his shop with him.
Was pretty cool scanning through his photos and seeing an image of mine on show like that.

Something different...
Posted by
dan lambert
I've been finding myself sketching up more and more graphic solutions to things, not sure what that means, the last thing I really need is another thing unfocusing the direction of my work, but we shall see. Anyway, I was reminded of probably the most graphic thing I've ever done, something for a university project that I decided to do something different with. My graphic design and typography skills leave a lot to be desired...coincidentally though, it's a fox

Something from the reject pile

Working on a few new portfolio pieces, but I don't wish to share them until their completion so until then; I give you some items from the reject pile. Either images I lost interest in, or just something I started for fun and didn't get around to finishing.

One more for the road

Another caricature in progress. This one is getting away from me, it seemed to me far stronger at the sketch stage than where it is now. Oh well, if nothing else it's value training.
Onwards and Downwards (All the best things go down: umm criminals, slides, trousers, certain beverages go down pretty well)
Take it easy anonymous people of the internet,
Dan

Life called, she was pissed.
I hope to have access to a scanner again soon, 'till then I have a few meager caricature sketch attempts from the digital realm.
Caricatures are HARD. Hopefully should have a finished one up soon.
